In a world where the Peace of Westphalia never happened, the Kingdom of Scandinavia is on the cusp of conquering Mercia for control of the English Channel. As his father’s seventh son, nothing is expected of Erik Haraldsson. Being sent to the army as a cure for wild behavior mostly worked. Until he finds a girl in the rubble of Cambridge, and rapes her. Surely, she couldn’t be naive enough to think ransom was on the table for her. The Queen of Normandy was in her fifties, far too old for another child. There were only two Norman princesses, and she must be the eldest as the younger wasn’t yet of age. Whatever came next, a flight back to Rouen wasn’t in the cards for her. He divided her potential fate into categories: what his brother would want, what was best for Scandinavia, what this girl probably deserved. But then there was what Erik wanted. Of all his father’s children, he was far from the most power-hungry. But he knew an opportunity when he saw one. And this girl? All opportunity.
