Fics like Dust under my fingertips, wailing in my throat

Law feels it in his throat as he’s approaching Marineford. An itch and then the taste of rot, the burn of bile. It builds and builds and he knows he is running out of time even as he’s barking at Hakugan and Ikkaku to get the Tang going as fast as possible. “Captain?” Shachi is asking, but he can’t answer, can’t risk it. If he opens his mouth, he’ll wail. If he wails, someone will die. The words on his arm taunt him “We’re getting there as soon as possible, Law,” Penguin intervenes and thankfully doesn’t expect an answer. But then again Penguin knows what Shachi doesn’t. Penguin saw Law gritting his teeth as he operated on Shachi, as he kept the other boy alive through sheer stubbornness alone. Saw him vomit ash and rot, eyes more black than gold when he looked back at him and told him Shachi would live. 'If I wail, someone dies. So I can’t afford to.' The last words your soulmate says to you are tattooed on your skin. Law is a banshee whose soulmate keeps dying on him.
