Something sharp and unpleasant twists low in Dana’s stomach before she can stop it. Because Cassie hasn’t looked at her like that all day, hasn’t softened once. Not after the trauma, not after the staffing disaster, not after Dana spent hours trying to keep the entire department from capsizing. She knows it’s unfair the moment it passes through her mind. Dana’s the one who’s been stomping around the ER like an active thunderstorm since sunrise, snapping at Cassie in front of staff because she was overwhelmed and overstimulated and furious at literally everyone with a pulse. Still, the feeling comes anyway. Small and ugly and immediate. Or: Though everyone at PTMC is blissfully unaware, Dana and Cassie have been dating for a few months when a new nurse joins the team.
