Fics like The Red Years

A linked short-story cycle set between 1898 and 1934, beginning in the aftermath of the Martian invasion and ending with the first imperfect vaccines. The stories are not about defeating the Martians. That already happened. They are about surviving the world they left behind. The central idea: humanity obtains fragments of Martian science, metallurgy, heat-ray optics, walking-machine hydraulics, atmospheric chemistry, and alien biology, but civilisation is too sick, traumatised, depopulated, and politically destabilised to exploit them properly. The twentieth century does not accelerate. It stutters. Britain wins the War of the Worlds, but inherits a poisoned empire.
