Fics like Grow As We Go

When Courtney DiLaurentis was eight years old, a doctor told her parents she was schizophrenic. He said she needed to be locked away in a institution before she hurt someone. The diagnosis was wrong. Courtney wasn't sick. She was just a little girl being terrorized by her identical twin sister, Ali. But Ali was charming. She was clever. She knew exactly how to cry at the right moments, how to look up at the adults with those big blue eyes and make them believe every word she said. Until a misdirected fax landed on the desk of Dr. Wells, a psychiatrist who actually looked at the whole picture, and realized the twin who needed help wasn't Courtney at all. For the first time, someone saw the truth. But Ali wasn't a monster. She was an eight-year-old girl with a condition that could be treated, someone who could still be reached if she got help in time. This story is about birthday candles and shooting stars and a girl who wished, every single year, for her sister to love her again. It's about the twin who spent just as long learning how. It's about a family that nearly fell apart under the weight of secrets and lies. And mostly, about two girls who shared a womb, then a war, and, finally, a life.
