Fics like Saudade

EXCERPT: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief – Chapter 3: Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants "I'm sorry, Percy," she said, seeing the look in my eyes. "But I can't talk about it. I—I couldn't send you to that place. It might mean saying good-bye to you for good." "For good? But if it's only a summer camp ..." -- Percy fights in a war and the boy - the man - who returns home is not one she knows. He has met monsters she doesn’t dare to imagine, he has been tortured and threatened and he has led armies into certain death. His back is ramrod straight, he flinches at too loud noises and occasionally, he will disappear for hours or days, only to return a little bit more angry and with new hurts. It’s a terrible thing for a mother to lose her child. She studies grief, reads self-help books, all of which are filled with empty platitudes. She thinks the death of her son might’ve been similar to a terminal illness, something that she had always known was inevitable. She thinks this makes her a terrible person. She mourns.
