Fics like A Thousands of Years in the Dark

Merlin Emrys, 1500 years old, clinical medical examiner, professional hermit, has finally made peace with the fact that Arthur is gone. He has not made peace with this. He has simply gotten very good at pretending. When Detective Inspector Arthur Pennington walks into his morgue on a Tuesday, looking exactly the same and remembering absolutely nothing, Merlin's carefully constructed equilibrium lasts approximately forty seconds. There is also a murder. Possibly magic. Definitely a conspiracy. But mostly, this is about a man who has been in love for fifteen centuries trying to hold it together in a pub while Arthur Pendragon sits pressed against his leg and has no idea. Slow burn. Reincarnation. Heavy on the yearning, light on the sense.
