Early in Ted’s tenure as coach, Sam and Jamie end up as roommates during an away game. That night Sam discovers Jamie is suicidal after Jamie asks him to sit with him, feeling like he might kill himself if he’s left alone. Jamie thinks Sam will leave him be afterwards, but Sam can’t just let Jamie walk away knowing all this, it wouldn’t be right. Sam’s attempt to look out for Jamie, even if Jamie thinks it’s not necessary, pushes him to become more confident and assertive, stepping up as a leader. Meanwhile, Jamie is pushed to be more open by Sam refusing to let him go on as if any of this is okay or normal. As their friendship develops, Jamie grapples with his childhood trauma, while Sam works through how he feels about becoming friends with someone who has bullied him in the past, as well as figuring out how to feel about the fact that Ted and Roy are imperfect people too, especially when it comes to how they approach Jamie.
