Fics like When The Hares Run Side By Side

A loving blend of Disney's Mulan, Chinese history, and the Ballad of Mulan poem come together to create this retelling of Hua Mulan's journey to serve in the army in her father's place. Mulan was never exactly the ideal eldest daughter, but she liked to believe that she would someday bring great honor to her family. However, everything changed when imperial soldiers came to her town and conscripted her elderly father into the military. She knew that with his injury from the last time he fought, he would never survive another war. So she snuck out in the dead of night, bought a horse, and joined the army in his place. She had no dreams of becoming a war hero, only surviving long enough to return home, but the reality of war is much more intense than she ever could have imagined. The person she was and the person she claims to be are warring in her mind, and the devastatingly attractive captain of her troop can't seem to keep his eyes off her. As the enemy makes their move, Mulan is suddenly faced with a decision: how much of herself is she willing to sacrifice for her country?
