Fics like The God in the Pit

In 2018, one hundred and twenty-four years after the first Martian cylinders fell, Britain still lives in the shadow of the old war. The tripods are gone. The red weed is mostly dead. But relics of the invasion still sleep in the ground, and there are people willing to kill for the promise that Mars might speak again. When Cassie Drake uncovers a buried alien artefact in the ruins of a Victorian excavation site, she finds herself hunted by a brutal Martian cult — and forced to deliver the thing to the only people in Britain mad enough to take it.
