Fics like Fragments of a World That Never Was

AveryTheMayo, or just Avery, traced the lines of the map with a trembling finger. Feeling an almost physical pull toward it. A magnetic tug that pressed against the inside of his chest. He imagined the floors, the corridors stretching into darkness. He couldn’t help but imagine the sterile fluorescent lights humming above. “How am I going to do this…?” He said outloud. . . . The ritual didn’t fail. It just didn’t end. D3rLrd3, or Derek survives, but not in any way that makes sense. Taken by the U.S Department of Metaphysical Sciences, he becomes something they cannot explain. Only contain. Avery is the only one who notices, the evidence that Derek is still out there. Now he is on the run with someone who knows too much. Remembers things that haven’t happened yet, and isn’t entirely human anymore. Retrieving him is the easy part. Understanding what came back isn’t. Derek knows how all of this ends. And he stayed anyway.
