Fics like The Half-Docked Tail (And Other Things We Find in the Wreckage)

Five days. Five days until Victoria Javadi hits the milestone of twenty-one, a birthday that feels less like a celebration and more like a final sentencing. Since she was thirteen, Victoria has been a drop of blood with a long tail, flying forward with a momentum she never chose, Saran-wrapped in the crushing expectations of the Javadi-Shamsi medical legacy. But the pressure cooker finally snaps. Between a shattered mirror, a "tornado" of broken degrees, and the red-knuckled fury of a gifted child burnout, Victoria flees the clinical cold of her home for the only person who doesn't see a prodigy when they look at her. In Cassie McKay’s rustic, Mexican-inspired kitchen, there are no coins to count—only ribs eaten by hand, animal crackers (the lions, always the lions), and the grounding weight of an American Pit Bull Terrier who knows exactly what it’s like to be broken and rebuilt. As the jet lag catches up, Victoria discovers that pretend is the only thing that feels real. With a weighted collar to keep her from floating away and a pack leader who isn't afraid to hang up on her mother, Victoria has to decide: can she be a doctor and a pup? Or is it time to let the mirror stay broken?
