Fics like promise to be dazzling

It's filed away now, the lesson he'd learned that day, somewhere deep in his memory. In many ways, he's sure it's informed every aspect of his life since then: Don't shine too bright. Don't do too much. Don't pull focus. Stand out by blending in. They'll hate you if you show them who you really are. And Shane doesn't want to be hated. Shane wants to be revered. So he learns to rein himself in, to try with all his might to be unselfish. To pass the puck even if he doesn't want to. To dull his shine just enough to still be considered the best without losing the respect of the lesser players around him. It seems entirely unfair, then, that Ilya Rozanov has seemingly no qualms at all about being hated. OR: Shane was a puck hog as a kid. Now he only gets to be greedy with Ilya.
