He’s rotting from the inside out. That’s what it feels like. He prays for the clean decay of autumn leaves, beautiful and purposeful. He receives the rot of fruit left too long in the sun, of meat gone bad, of something organic turning wrong. The fear that he’s a bad boyfriend by being this broken thing, collection of malfunctioning systems held together by athletic tape and stubbornness and the increasingly disgustingly desperate need to keep performing, keep winning. He’s breaking well into his twenties and ranked number two in the world and his body is giving up on him. Or maybe he’s giving up on his body.
