Fics like Velvet Dust in the Quiet House

The mansion was too quiet for its size. The long hallways echoed with dust and time, and Felix had grown used to being alone with it. He arrived before sunrise most days, let himself in through the side entrance with the key left for him in a plain envelope, and disappeared into his duties before anyone stirred upstairs. He didn’t speak unless spoken to. He didn’t linger in rooms once they were cleaned. And he certainly didn’t ask questions. Still, Felix noticed everything. Felix first noticed the silence. Not the usual silence of a large, underused mansion. This was sharper. Louder. The absence of movement. The laundress hadn’t come in. The cook’s room was empty. He didn’t pass the older gardener smoking behind the greenhouses, didn’t hear the usual banter from the chauffeur on his phone. At first, he thought he was early. By noon, he realized— He was the only one left.
