The passenger shuttle explosion is all over the orbital news broadcasts. Its only survivor, 21-year-old Connor Zilisch, has no memory of the accident. It's January, C.Y. 319, and Connor tells himself that he's just a mechano-sports pilot. When the racing season starts, he'll be in his mentor Dale Jr.'s old mech, the #8 Exo. Dale tells Connor to just focus on piloting. Connor's mysterious teammate, the #9, tells him to keep his chin up. And Connor befriends a technician for the #9 Exo, Shane van Gisbergen, who offers a listening ear. But Shane knows more about the shuttle explosion than he's letting on. And one day in February, he'll disappear without a trace. By the time Connor learns the truth, it'll be too late. In May, he'll find himself on a transport to Earth, wracked with guilt. And he'll spend the next five years of his life trying to put things right.
