It's of course impossible for Nicky to actually be using magic out on the ice. It's all warded and every surface treated with every material known to block magic. Even Alex can't manage to get around all the blocks, no matter how everyone seems convinced he somehow cheats. So he knows it's not magic as Nicky somehow finds him with a perfect pass through a crowd. He knows that but it still doesn't seem possible.
