Fics like implausible deniability

You’ve been stuck in this world for…probably a year now. Like the ebb and flow of a river you let your lot in life lead you through this stream, all for the hope that one day you could return home to where you truly belong. Where you’re supposed to be, like your ward once promised you. When that day shatters before your eyes, you set your sights on more desperate prospects—or rather they set their sights on you. You can’t trust anyone, especially a denizen of the City, but that game didn’t lie, didn’t it? If anyone could free you from the chains of this world, surely it would be her and that company’s capabilities, right? Hope is a fluttering and yet powerful thing. You were once miserably satisfied with finding a living within the Backstreets of the City, but with both of the things that you need so closely within reach, is it selfishness to want to hold onto that hope with all you have left? (Is it greed if you decide to push the plot along a little to the left every now and then?)
