In 2045, a mysterious “ubiquitous gestational inviability” has driven the global fertility rate to virtually zero. Only ten thousand women possessing the rare genotype “rr” can carry a pregnancy to term. This existential threat has led to the rise of the Utilitarian Sect in the United States, an authoritarian regime that has risen to power through undeniable logic and argumentative skill. The Sect soon arrives at a sobering realization: survival demands one hundred thousand births within fifteen years from these ten thousand rr women, nearly all of whom have refused the call to be "Vessels." Invoking the greater good, the reluctant women are captured and rebranded as "Boundmaids," where a dollar-driven ecosystem subjects them to the wildest luxuries mixed with the most humiliating rituals. Society rejoices in renewal, Boundmaids writhe in engineered euphoria, all in utilitarianism's calculus of net pleasure.
