Dennis has never really noticed what the locker room sounds like. Unintelligible conversation from the hallway, faint beeping from the floor, a squeaky pipe yelling somewhere above them. All of it’s background noise compared to the sound of Robby inhaling his shirt, his breath catching on an almost sound, like something trapped behind bars. Dennis legs feel like they evaporated. “What—” “Might if I borrow this,” Robby says, voice cracking, almost as if he’s about to laugh but his face is ashen. His eyes are everywhere except for Dennis’ face. And before Dennis can answer or scream or drop to his knees, Robby’s jogging out the door. “Sure!” Dennis says a minute later. “Have a good night!” A zillion times Dennis fluffs Robby for Noelle, one time he doesn’t.
