Fics like NANI!? The Boy Who Bullied You Just Asked You Out?

Finally, Richie met Max’s eyes. They’re full of shame and pain and something Richie couldn’t quite put his finger on. It felt like he was seeing Max for the first time, not the Jagermeister. “You didn’t even hesitate. You just jumped in, man.” Max shook his head in disbelief. “You don’t even like me. Why did you do that?” For a moment Richie was quiet. He wondered why he had stepped in, too. Max had been tormenting him and his friends since the first day of grade school, shouldn’t he have been happy to see him go? But there was that moment right before the floor gaped its jaw open, when Max thought he was alone and lamented aloud about his father. At that moment Richie realized he wasn’t just some cartoon villain, but a boy his age. A broken guy who was so alone that he was excited to be scared by others if it meant he could have a shred of attention. He may not have liked Max, but he understood him. “You don’t deserve to die.”
