Eventually Oscar couldn't hold it back anymore. "How does it work? The blood thing. The compulsion to drink it." Lando blinked, clearly not expecting that question. "I'm serious," Oscar continued, his nurse-brain fully engaged now. "Why does it have to be blood specifically? What about other bodily fluids? And what part of the blood are you actually consuming? The hemoglobin? The iron? Plasma proteins? Is it the stem cells in the bone marrow? What's the active ingredient?" Lando stared at him for a moment, then let out a surprised laugh. "You sound like you're trying to write a research paper." "I'm trying to understand," Oscar said. "Clinically. Scientifically. If this is real—and clearly it is—then there has to be some kind of mechanism. Some explanation."
