Buck freezes, like his entire body has hit pause. “…Eddie?” he says carefully. Eddie hums, distracted, still smiling as he presses a kiss to Buck’s neck. “Mm?” “What,” Buck asks, “are you doing?” The words land wrong. Off key. Eddie pulls back slightly, blinking. He looks up and sees Buck’s face when he turns to face him. Wide eyes. Pink cheeks. Mouth half open like he’s been rebooted. The kitchen suddenly feels very quiet. “I—” Eddie’s smile falters. “I was just—” Buck gently, awkwardly untangles Eddie’s arms from around his waist and takes a step away. The space between them feels enormous. “Did you just,” Buck pauses, gesturing vaguely between them, “grab my ass?” Eddie’s brain catches up all at once. The dream. The kisses that never happened. The relationship that never happened.
