Fics like Shelter from the Cold

Was Steve lying to Sam when he protested that others needed a room at The Helicarrier Hotel over Christmas more than he does? No. He could name two score of them: the men he’s met in the queue for the soup kitchen; the women he lets set up their tents or bedrolls behind his own to stave off predation. But it’s not just that he’ll be leaving them to fend for themselves while he’s scooped up by the halo of charity. It’s the heroin of warmth. Comfort. Normality. The knowledge of how much worse the withdrawal will be when this temporary sanctuary closes its doors. It’s people like Bucky and Sam. People who live lives of service, an ideal Steve had cherished and now feels impossible. It’s hands reaching out for him, clamouring from every angle as he tumbles down to Wonderland, so many of them that it’s inevitable a few will catch him. And knowing he’ll have to wrestle his way out of their grasp if he’s to reach his children.
