Fics like home's just a distant town

The snow smells different here. It’s the first thing Ilya thinks when he exits the airport terminal onto the street, the flakes falling thick and heavy from the late evening sky. Is the altitude different from Boston? The temperature? The pollutants? Maybe it’s the cigarettes—he can pick up the distinct smoky vanilla of Chapmans from the guy on the corner, harder to get in the US, and his fingers itch to light up something himself. Whatever it is, he hasn’t smelled it in years. Ever since Sochi, he’d only had summers in Russia. After his father's death, Ilya returns to Moscow to pick up the pieces of what's left of his family, only to find that his grief encompasses more than he ever expected. A look into Ilya, Russia, and the inexplicable meaning of home.
