Fics like Bleed Into Me

“Sergeant Barrow — ” Edward begins, voice at a whisper, then thinks better of it. What do formalities matter, now? Can he not address one of the few true friends he still has as he wishes, just once? “Thomas, I…I’m rather glad you’ve come.” “Oh?” “It’s just…I’ve only just realized I can’t even leave a note, and I’d hoped to say goodbye.” “I’m sure Doctor Clarkson would’ve passed on any message y’wanted t’leave,” Thomas says quietly, allowing the truth of that to hang in the air between them for a moment, voice not quite steady enough to hide the harrowed feelings underlying Thomas’ nearly-even keel when he adds, “Only, you’re not talking about goin’ t’Farley Hall, are you?” Edward is due to leave for Farley Hall first thing in the morning and Thomas seeks him out to say goodbye late at night. He catches him just before he can put a razor to his wrists.
