Fics like It's Gonna Be a Long, Long Time

"The tears come like a flood that has waited a century for the gates to open. They burn through him, fierce and unrelenting, and the echo that answers from the vaulted ribs above makes him feel as if the bones themselves are weeping too. Everything in this building is speaking to him now. Every plaque, every fossil, every quiet miracle encased in glass—it all chants the same command: Live. Live. Live. The spider and the wasp, locked forever in amber, whisper it from their tiny, shining tomb: We died so you could breathe. The ammonites spiral it upward from their shells, the pattern endless, unbroken: We turned to stone so you would have ground to stand on. The dust of the trilobites hums it through the marble floor: Carry us forward. We did not end; we became you. He grips his knees, folds inward as if to protect himself from the enormity of it." ... In another version of this story, it all ends in blood. This is not that story. ... Or: how Finn Mikaelson learned how to save himself.
