Fics like Nothing gold can stay

The place smells faintly of citrus and rain. It’s so painfully nostalgic, but Nice can’t pin it. “Gege?” The voice comes small and sure, the way children sound when they aren’t afraid of the world yet. Nice turns. A boy stands a few feet away, barefoot on the packed dirt. His hair is brown, unevenly cut, one side longer than the other, messy sun caught strands falling over a round, chubby face still a little flushed from running. He’s missing one of his front teeth, along the bottom. His shirt is too big, sleeves rolled to his elbows, the yellow collar stained with something that might be some kind of juice. For a second, Nice forgets how to breathe. The boy blinks at him with those wide, brown eyes, familiar in a way that claws at his chest. “Gege, are you okay? You look…” He tilts his head, searching for the word. “Hurt.”
