Peter has been abused in his childhood by his own family. Everyone else sees the Hales as noble, honorable members of the town. Peter and Stiles start dating, against all odds. In private, Talia punishes Peter at first for starting to date, but in front of Stiles, she keeps up the facade of a happy family. The Hales love Stiles, they are warm to him, and they keep up the facade perfectly. Then the fire happens finally. Peter manages to crawl out of the collapsing house. He cries, but not for the reason everyone thinks, it’s not sorrow, it’s not grief. It's a relief, it's a relief of finally being free of the family. Peter doesn’t attend the funeral. Stiles still thinks the Hales were a loving family, until he starts picking up hints of what went on behind the scenes. Even if Peter never says anything outright. But now, Stiles sees the scars, both emotional and physical. And Stiles feels sick when he learns the truth.
