Fics like A Bouquet of Smoke and Daisies

An Alternate universe in which Pomni is a young detective protégée, determined to prove herself as she solos her first case-- a bizarre string of break-ins with the same note left behind. Before she knows it however, she is entangled within the trails of a crime spree seemingly created just for her to find. Each new clue becomes more personal, and more surreal until she cannot help but wonder how this connects to her own life. Meanwhile, Jax, a smooth-talking con artist with a smirk as sharp as his tricks, leads a double life. By day, he's tossing dough and dodging customer complaints at the run-down pizza shop and money laundering front Spudzy's. by night, he's the mastermind behind the very crimes Pomni is investigating. But Jax isn’t just in it for the thrill-- he’s bound to the enigmatic and ruthless crime lord Caine, paying off a staggering debt with no end in sight. Each heist, each scam, is just another link in his metaphorical shackles. With amateur detective Pomni finding odd comfort in the peeling paint and neon lights of Spudzy's during her pursuit of the case, how long can Jax maintain their budding friendship before Pomni pieces his double-life together...and what happens when she does?
