Fics like These Paper Walls I Can't Break Through

The truth is that Maverick has always cared too much about the things people say. The truth is that he’s spent his whole life trying to outrun his father’s legacy, and sometimes he stumbles and the rest of the world catches up to him, and it hurts when they get close enough for him to hear the awful things that come out of their mouths. The truth is that Maverick learned from a very young age that sometimes the only way to survive is to hit first and make it count. OR Maverick knows pain. Hell, it's the only thing he's good at besides flying a plane. He just doesn't know how much longer Goose can bear it with him before it starts to break them apart. He doesn't know how long he can stand Iceman staring at him before he starts to wonder exactly what it is the other aviator is actually seeing buried under Maverick's skin. OR The mortifying ordeal of being known.
