It wasn’t the work Thomas had imagined for himself, but then again, he’d long since stopped imagining a future for himself. The shop was tucked between a tailor and a laundress, modest and clean, with a single window filled with braces and straps and pieces of mannequins wearing assorted items. Hands with brass knuckles, knees of jointed steel, feet shaped from rosewood. It was a workshop for ghosts, Thomas thought, a place where broken bodies came to be reassembled. The war had ended, but for Thomas, peace had arrived in random shards. Dismissed from Downton without references, he drifted through Leeds and York, carrying luggage, cleaning alleys, surviving. His bad hand ached and curled in on itself, his pride following suit. Having finally been offered a job in a prosthetics workshop, Thomas manages to find something he hadn't dared imagine and begins to build himself up again.
