Fics like The Devils that Come Out at Night

The illusion didn’t break until he threw open the door and was faced with something that was… decidedly not the wooden sword level. A noise rose from his throat- at first a confused whine, then something that melted into a bone-crushing relief when he suddenly realized where he was. His knees gave out almost immediately as the sun landed on his face, warm and inviting, and he gazed out over swathes of broken plains meant to parkour over. “Oh,” he whispered, the verbal realization slipping from his lips before he even realized it. “O-oh. I’m… I’m…” The word ‘Safe’ rose in his mind for only a moment before being promptly beaten back by the basic knowledge of the world and how it worked. ‘Safe’ wasn’t a thing- not really. But if he wasn’t in danger, why was his body still begging to flee? Why did the prey drive, buried deep beneath his chest, still scream and cry for mercy? Why couldn’t he just stand up and do something other than sit here, uselessly, sobbing helplessly over the sight he should have drawn comfort from? Boey's nightmares, and how they eventually led to him learning how to seek comfort from his caretakers in their wake.
