Gavin remembers getting ready for work in the summer of 2036 and then finds himself waking up in the hospital in the winter of 2044. He's missing nine years of memories. Memories of his career, of social norms being shaken, and of his apparent marriage are all gone. Now he has to relearn the life he's led the last decade. Connor remembers the day of Gavin's car accident with too much clarity. Weeks afterwards, when the love of his life wakes up from his coma, he looks at Connor like a stranger. Gavin can't remember the life they've had together, shared together. He can't remember that Connor is an android. And old prejudices are hard to forget.
