Fics like Twenty Four Hours

The telephone rang in Jack’s bedroom, and he paused to put a bookmark in place before he levered himself out of his chair and went to get it. He’d had a nice, if quiet, evening; a glass of the good whisky that Phryne had given him for his birthday, the first half of a new science fiction novel, a fire in the hearth and the prospect of an early night in a regrettably empty bed, A call at that time of night could only mean one thing, and even the prospect of an excuse to see Phryne no longer held an attraction now that he needed no excuse. He was, therefore, a little curt as he answered. “Robinson speaking. Who’s calling?” “Oh, good evening, Inspector,” Dot Collins said, and he relaxed a little. “I’m sorry to bother you so late, but we wondered if Miss Fisher will be with us for breakfast, or if I should come and collect her for her dress fitting tomorrow?” He frowned and shifted uncomfortably, letting the embarrassment of the situation tamp down the flare of concern. “I’m afraid she’s not here, Mrs Collins. She was gone by the time I got back from work."
