Fics like Vested Interests

Is there a reality where humans and dragons can coexist peacefully, given the messy heart of humanity? Yes. But for that dream to survive, you cannot stay isolated. Empathy is not enough without a bridge to the rest of the world. You need the missing puzzle piece. You need a Marius. Despite being an island famed for its dragon killers, isn't it strange how no empire, no country has launched a crusade to kill dragons themselves? To take over the job and be done with it? For centuries, Berk has enjoyed guaranteed sovereignty. The cost to being free from these crusaders? Kill the dragons and keep them away from flying south to the Mainland. Be the shield that keeps dragons from flying south, so that the great Empires look away. Berk's closest ally in this delicate peace has always been the Marius family. Their official business is trade. Their real job? Presenting Berk's 'proof of work' to the southern Empires, maintaining the balance of power through information and coin. But the entire world is thrown off its axis when Hiccup befriends a Night Fury. - A retelling of HTTYD that rebuilds the world from the ground up to explore what it would truly take for dragons to remain.
