Fics like Black Lace and Ribbon

“Ava?” Jay’s younger self asks, meeting her sister’s blue eyes in the mirror. “Yeah, Jay-Jay?” Ava smiles at her, expertly detangling Jay’s riot of curls. “Do you think I should straighten my hair?” She averts her eyes when she asks, looking down to where she’s fidgeting with her hands. “So it looks prettier?” Ava’s hands pause their careful ministrations. “Jay…did someone—did they insult you?” Their voice is carefully controlled, but Jay can easily pick out the thread of anger underneath the calm. “Just tell me who, and I’ll handle it. Was it Maxwell? I told you not to listen to anything that he said, he’s just an asshole.” “No. No one said anything. I just thought…that it would be nice. To be pretty like you.” --- Or, Jay reflecting before Grimm's party, and how it's okay to become your own person even when it feels wrong.
