Fics like Sensitive Period

Many passerines have what ornithologists call a “sensitive period” during the first few weeks of their life, where they are primed for vocal development and learn their own species song via observation of, most often, the father. If you didn’t care about the ethical concerns, you could kidnap and drop a hatchling in an echo chamber, feed it ground up worm pellets and clean up its excrement from routinely sterilized projections in the walls, build it a nest from PETE hair bristles and aluminum foil. With nothing to pluck its neurons beyond the sound of its own wails, it never learns to correctly sing. If it was lucky, it may attempt a delicate, babbling sub-song it picked up from its father, or even struggle through the plastic skeleton of an entire motif, but it would never sound 100% right. Not to its conspecific bird, and not to itself. - or - Serizawa struggles with the expectations surrounding being a “man” and an “adult” and all the baggage that comes from not being able to satisfy those expectations. Reigen shares those struggles, but via a separate journey.
