Fics like An Ode To The Water: Éveilleuse de l’âme et de l’amour

December, 1960 Following the band’s deportation from Hamburg in increments, after the fortnight they all spent in solitude, not talking to each other. Paul is bitter and hurt from his last interaction with John: a vicious fight which he thinks has marred their friendship for good. What begins as an acrid reunion full of tension and spite slowly simmers down to the uncomfortable truth of what the two really want from each other. *** "Paul had waited for the postman every day feverishly, hoping for some sort of message. If John knew just how desperate he’d acted, how pathetic the whole ordeal was, maybe he’d have sent the letter. There wasn’t any lifetime or parallel universe in which Paul wouldn’t have wanted to hear from John, or not wanted to read a letter he penned himself using his calloused fingers."
