Fics like A Little Birdie Told Me...

Alternatively: don't count your chickens before they hatch! Season 8 AU, where Eddie leaves earlier and Buck does NOT sublet his house. In which Eddie comes to certain realisations in El Paso and and finds support in Maddie. He, Chris and the wider 118 expect to find Buck right where they left him when they set him aside to come back to when they needed him. Spoiler alert: Buck does not get that memo. With his plans and assumptions blown out of the water, will Eddie and the 118 find out what all has been going on with Buck while they weren't paying attention? Is Buck going to let them away with half hearted (if any) apologies this time?
