Fics like The Only Exception

A gentle touch. A smile. A phrase spoken in a soft tone. The slightest act of affection would make Dogman his—Petey knew that perfectly well. He was desperate for his love, so obviously it hurt. But Petey’s soul wasn’t ready to return that love, and it never would be. The thought of giving him hope felt criminally wrong. It felt like robbing Ohkay’s first bank while laughing in everyone’s face. Euphoric and miserable all at once. Dogman’s heart was the city’s greatest treasure—on display and unguarded, with nothing to shield it. His for the taking, if only he dared to stretch out a paw and claim it. --- Petey’s childhood was harsh. Now he’ll have to wrestle with the fractured idea of love passed down by his parents if he ever wants to fall in love and build a family of his own.
