The game had been Sirius’ idea, of course. Bored out of his mind during one of their seventh year lessons on Veritaserum, Sirius had decided that nothing would be more entertaining than forcing their friend group to take turns under the influence of the truth potion. It had been chaos from the start, with Sirius volunteering to go first to prove it wasn’t a big deal—only to end up confessing his feelings for Remus when someone had cheekily asked if he was in love. Since then, the game had become a regular feature of their hangouts, and James had been dodging his turn like his life depended on it. There were too many questions he didn’t want to answer, too many truths that hit too close to home.
