Fics like Only Hands To Cling To

She has seen Holmes brought to his very lowest self before, has seen him tortured physically and tormented mentally and altogether more than halfway into the grave, but it was never quite like this. He looks shockingly small, startlingly childlike, swallowed up by that narrow white bed. One would not think to apply the word delicate to Holmes, but it comes to mind now. The odor of fresh vomit persists in the air, sickeningly familiar, and Russell notices with a flare of obscure fury that a smear of the foul stuff lingers on Holmes’s sunken cheek. She steps brusquely toward him, extending her arm to wipe away that smear with her sleeve. Holmes’s bruised eyelids flicker but remain shut. He is not asleep.
