Fics like Moonlight Raising from The Grave

His skin pulls tight, and a vague ripple wanders down his spine, an urge to shift and protect searing as he stuffs it down and reaches in with two blood-slicked palms. Dry patches of soft down catches and sticks to his hands, but more hot crimson also coats them as he gently lifts the pup out from beneath entrails. A girl, judging by her scent. Earthy, green - maybe a little spiced. It’s hard to tell with so much of her blood intermingled with what he thinks must be her mama's and her other fallen packmate. Distantly, he feels Tess come to hover behind him, her hand now braced firmly on the same shoulder she’d been tender with only minutes ago. “Is it still alive?” Her voice shakes and her scent shifts, turning startled and unsure. The low whine and broken whimper that whistles out of the pup as he clears the protective curve of the two dead wolves says yes. The pained twist and wiggle as she pants says that she may not be for long. Christ almighty she’s little. Ain’t supposed to shift this young, shouldn't be able to. - Joel and Tess find Ellie in the carnage of her pack. Post outbreak, a wolf pup is rare thing, something to be protected at all costs.
