Fics like A Fish in a Birdcage

A wave washes over my face, shocking me back to my immediate situation. I’m alive, somehow, but for how long? As I tread water, my mind races with various explanations as the what the fuck is going on. Is this the afterlife? Some sort of twisted dream? Or something else entirely? In the distance, I hear what sounds like a yell. Hope blooms in my chest as I turn towards the noise, squinting against the sun's glare on the water. Is that a boat? Hope surges within me as I begin to swim, determined to reach a reprieve from my crazy predicament. Suddenly, something whips past my face, and I realize that it had to have come from the ship ahead of me. I turn to look at the object, only to notice the odd skin-like texture of it. Is that... an arm?
