Before he can go to Clarksdale, Remmick has a near-fatal encounter with another vampire. Before the sun can finish him off, he is saved by Jane Townsend, a biracial healer living alone in a hut on the edge of a plantation. One that her mother's owner, Big Daddy Jackson, left them both - much to his son's ire. His son, in fact, wants nothing more than to evict her and claim even that small spit of land for himself, for reasons known only to him. Kept at arm's length by both races, facing the threat of eviction, with a long-dead mother and no father, Jane is lonely enough to let this strange, pale man into her home... and into her heart. And Remmick is never one to turn down an invitation. As romance blooms between them, Remmick and Jane bring out new sides to each other: The former rediscovers some of his lost humanity while the latter learns that, sometimes, the only way to live free is to live in the shadows.
