Fics like A Shift in the Narrative

Long ago, the four Great Races of Middle Earth - the Hobbits, the Dwarves, the Elves, and the Men - were gifted the ability to take animal form in times of great distress. Each race had an animal that was unique to their kind. But the Dwarves have forgotten this gift. The ability to change shape has been lost for so long, they have all forgotten that the gift ever existed in their people, and their race has been diminished as a result. Gandalf thinks the dwarves are not beyond saving - and he thinks one strong and determined, but unassuming, hobbit might just hold the key.
