Fics like better with you in it

He sleeps right through the apocalypse. When he finally wakes up, the Earth's already gone to shit and finished its smoke break. There's more sand in the air than ash, static on every frequency that’s been drilled into him, and too much sun all around. The first thing the Asset does after crawling out of the collapsed bunker is put a bullet through a rat the size of a toddler trying to chew his boot off. The first thing Bucky does, though that happens much later, is laugh. It’s real fucking ironic to be standing in a sea of burning sand after centuries in his deep-freeze deluxe and still be cold. Hell of a welcome back. It’s simple. The world ended. He didn’t.
