Frank wants to smooth those lines away with his thumb. “It would be rude to cancel, wouldn’t it?” “Yeah,” Frank confirms, and Mel’s shoulders drop. Frank feels the words rising up, and he knows he’s going to say them. Mel’s roommate wants to set her up. Mel needs a convenient excuse to get the roommate off her back. “I could go with you.” “Oh,” Mel says, very quietly. She studies him from beneath her eyelashes, the frames of her glasses. “That’s very kind of you, Frank. I would be happy to have a friend there.” “No, uh.” Frank stops, swallows thickly. “I could pretend to be your boyfriend. Get you out of those dates.”
