They’d left him behind. OR: Carl gets separated from Lori and Shane while they're watching the bombing of Atlanta. He'll never find them again, but it's okay. He can survive just fine on his own. He finds someone else, anyhow, a little sister, and they're going to be okay. They're going to be safe.
